Apple is expanding its Fitness+ platform into gym-based strength training with a new feature called Gym Strength, according to reports from iClarified, AppleInsider, and 9to5Mac. Currently available to developers testing the iOS 27.3 and iPadOS 27.3 betas, the feature brings personalized workout planning, video demonstrations, and optional Apple Watch integration to lifting routines.
How Gym Strength Plans Work
According to 9to5Mac, Gym Strength creates progressive, four-week plans tailored to individual fitness goals, experience levels, schedules, and available equipment. Users set up their routine by choosing how many days per week they want to work out—ranging from two to five days—and selecting target body areas.
Sessions can consist of either five exercises, estimated to take 20 to 30 minutes, or seven exercises lasting 45 to 60 minutes depending on pace. For each workout, the system recommends specific exercises along with target sets, repetitions, and weights. Plans adapt week-to-week based on the actual reps and weights recorded by the user.
The exercise library encompasses over 350 movements utilizing more than 30 types of strength equipment. Dumbbells serve as the minimum equipment requirement, allowing routines to be performed at home or in a commercial gym. If equipment is unavailable or a machine is occupied, users can choose alternative exercises with a similar movement and body focus, swap equipment, add sets, or skip movements entirely.
Demonstrations and Equipment Flexibility
Each exercise includes short video demonstrations featuring Apple Fitness+ trainers. These videos can be expanded to display movements from three different angles. Supported equipment spans a wide range, including dumbbells, kettlebells, barbells, cable machines, and suspension trainers.
An Apple Watch running the watchOS 27.3 beta is optional, allowing users to view exercises, log reps and weights, and track heart rate and calories burned directly from their wrist. Additionally, Gym Strength introduces an optional feature called Training Note, which is powered by Apple Intelligence. Training Note previews upcoming workouts, explains progression, and highlights milestones. This optional feature requires an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone or iPad set to English, though the broader Gym Strength experience does not require AI capabilities.
Subscription and Availability Details
Gym Strength is included as part of existing Apple Fitness+ subscriptions at no extra cost. In the U.S., Fitness+ costs $9.99 per month or $79.99 per year, and subscriptions can be shared with up to family members. The service is also included in the Apple One Premier bundle, which is priced at $39.95 per month.
